I was extremely nervous for my first marathon. I wasn't really sure how to approach it. I knew that I was in good 10k shape, but it was clear that Logan Fielding was the favorite. So I decided to stick with the leaders through 21 miles. I tucked in behind Logan and he pulled us through the first 10 miles, then it hit me. I needed to go pee. I hoped there would be an outhouse at mile 11, but no luck, so shortly before mile 12 I told Logan that I was going to surge ahead to get to the portapotties at the half mark. I built up a 10-15 second lead, and it only took a minute, in and out. (Yeah, I got some funny looks from the spectators.) By now I was a long way behind Logan, so I went to work hard the next 1.5 miles. I caught Logan up the hill before mile 15. When we topped the hill it was obvious that something wasn't right with Logan.  He had a major side ache.  Our pace slowed for several miles, we didn't even pick it up very much when we started going down the canyon.  I felt bad for Logan and stuck with him until mile 21.  At that point I shifted back into race pace, and Logan had his hamstring go out on him.  It was clear by the time that I got out of the canyon that I was going to win.  I told Trevor Ball that I felt like I could race a 5k right then.  I enjoyed the feeling, and hoped that my body would continue feeling that good, it did.  And that is the story of my first marathon.  I was greatful for the advise and running of Sasha, Logan, Paul and Trevor Ball.  You guys made all the difference.  Thanks

I showed up to the Magna 5k to try to run it with Teren Jameson. I knew he would go out fast, so I went with him. 4:17 first mile downhill with wind on the back. I settled into pace with Teren, then just before mile 2 my legs felt the wear of the Ogden Marathon, I decided to ease up and run for 2nd overall. I did this and it was a ton of fun.

By the Way, I did 6 x 1 mile repeats rabbiting for Kara Goucher after the Magna 5k. It was a blast.  Alberto Salazar was there, along with some of his athletes. (Josh Rohatinsky, Galen Rupp, Adam Goucher, and a Ugandan, who holds the NCAA 800m record.)  They were all really nice.  Kara was a blast to work out with.  I hope that the trials go well for her, and then the Olympics.

I have won this 5k 4-5 times.  Usually there isn't much competition.  But this year the race was stacked with college runners.  I just pushed the first 2 miles, and then jogged into the finish with Dustin Bybee (BYU).  He easily outkicked me the last 400m.  It was a fun run.

The mileage was slow and easy, just a good recovery.

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, May 30, 2008 at 15:28:16

Seth - welcome to the blog. Now are you ready for this? Better get ready, here it comes, Sasha Science for Seth. If I could give you my endurance, or you could give me your 1500 speed, here is how fast this Seth-Sasha monster would run:

Draper Days 5 K - 13:49. This means more like 13:30 on the track at sea level.

SLC Track Club 10 K (flat out and back course) - 29:12, yes that's right, 29:12 on the road at altitude. Probably in the low 28s on the track at sea level.

St. George Marathon - 2:07:28, so probably a low-2:10 or a little under on a course like Berlin or Dubai.

You may think of yourself as a middle distance runner, but remember that so did Ryan Hall. While not every 3:52 1500 runner has the Ryan Hall's endurance potential, I would guess about 20-30% do, and if you have struggled breaking 55 in a quarter, that increases the probability for you quite a bit, as it would indicate a larger percentage of slow twitch fibers.

I do not know yet how to get your speed, but I do have some ideas of how you could get my endurance, or at least a portion of it. From your workouts it looks like you are headed in the right direction training-wise - lots of base, very cautious. A consistently healthy diet in combination with good sleep makes a big difference as well in two areas - developing the stamina, and preserving Quality X (my term for sustainable speed potential) as you age.

With the diet I would start with "if you already know it is bad, do not eat it", and then gradually discover which foods are the best for your body. With the sleep, bed time curfew works very well.

Are you going to run the USA marathon championships this year, or is that planned for further out? Logan and I will both be at the race (I am in the Master's Championship, however).

Tonight I ran 6.3 with Taylor Price straight up a mountain in Logan Canyon. It was beautiful and the entire mountain was green.

PS I don't really care about how many miles I run.  I focus more on the minutes and the effort.  This way I don't push the pace trying to get done with a run, rather I just enjoy the run and learn more about my body.  I hope that makes sense.

At about 3 am I ran leg 22, 6.4 miles with a slight uphill finish.  I just locked into pace and hammered away for 35 minutes until the finish.  I felt strong, but with BYU over 20 minutes ahead there was no reason to kill myself yet.  I had to be patient for Ragnar.  I knew I could make up some serious time there.

I should preface this entry with a big thanks to my team, St George Running Center, and Fastrunningblog.com, but especially the guys in my van, Dave, Adam, Taylor, Clyde, Logan, and my brother in law Jake.  They really were the key to the success we had in our van.  Anyway, I ran Ragnar at about 10am.  The weather was warm, but not nearly as hot as last year.  I ran super hard the first mile, 8:02, but I couldn't breath.  I was super congested.  I thought the record was out of reach, but I still pushed to try to win the overall award.  Mile 2 was faster, 7:30 range.  By now I was feeling better, but I still didn't think the record was in my grasp.  I hammered the last 2 miles well under 7 min mile pace and ended up 29:12 on my watch,(old record 29:13), so we will see how the official results come out.

PS My legs felt strong and healthy, no big knots, Sunday and Monday.  This is the best I have felt after WBR.

From Jon on Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 13:21:35

Go for it. Should be lots of fun, as long as you enjoy some crazy trail runs. Of course, then I won't have a shot at winning it, but that's not a big deal :) I'm real excited for it and will have a ton of fun.

I got an email from the race director about trail conditions. Let me know if you decide to do it and I can forward it to you. If you want more info, you can read Paul's or Cody's blog from the end of June last year for their race reports.

From Paul Petersen on Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 13:22:00

Your Ragnar splits are amazing. Nice work.

Regarding Logan Peak, even if you jog it, it is still 28 miles on grueling terrain, so it will mess over your races for the next couple weeks. If you plan on trying to win a 4th of July race, I wouldn't do it, but if you're not doing anything until Des News, it would probably actually help you.

From Burt on Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 14:19:38

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Jul 01, 2008 at 18:58:47

Seth - looks like your immune system is a weak spot. It may not be pathologically weak as in something that would make your doctor concerned, but it does cause problems when you run competitively. I have struggled with the issue of keeping your immune system strong while training hard. Below is a summary of what I've learned.

You do not get sick because there are too many germs, nor do you get sick because your immune system is weak. You get sick because your immune system is too weak to handle the germs around you. Therefore, the strategy of staying healthy is a) maximize the strength of the immune system and b) minimize the exposure to the germs.

I found that the following is critical in accomplishing a), and you must have all of it right, or else the weakest link in the chain fails you:

* Sleep. It is a challenge for me, which I solve by having a strict bed time curfew. Unless it is something extremely out of the ordinary and involves somebody in dire need, at 10:00 PM I am in bed and nothing gets me out of it.

* Stress control. Aside from the obvious stress from school or work deadlines, conflicts, arguments, being upset, etc, things like travel, shopping, and site-seeing are also a form of stress. Those things are important and add to the quality of life, but you must realize that at 120 miles a week there is a certain quota of how much of that you can do without compromising your immune system, and if the circumstances require it, you may need to taper for such activities.

* Diet. Everything you put into your body has an effect on your immune system. Some things affect it more than others, but pretty much every time you take a bite it either builds or destroys your defenses. Learn which foods make your body stronger, and which do the opposite, and eat with awareness. The notion that you have to weaken your body to enjoy the foods you eat is a big lie. It is a great experience to eat something that tastes great, and then have your body feel as great as that food tasted.

* Magic immune system foods. For me it is garlic. When I remember to eat it consistently, and I take care of the other items, I do not get sick even though I spend most of the day in the same house with 5 children ages 9 and under.

To address b) more often than not there is not much you can do except wash your hands frequently. But if a) is good you are often able to deal with whatever b) will throw at you.

From James on Tue, Jul 01, 2008 at 19:07:54

Hope you feel better soon!

From Jon on Tue, Jul 01, 2008 at 19:28:55

Or maybe he just had some food poisoning that got him sick for a day. Independent of immune system.

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Jul 01, 2008 at 19:44:06

No, this is a second time in a month. And he had mono before. Even if it was food poisoning, suseptibility to food poisoning is an immune system weakness. Every time you get sick, it is always germ X with some technical name. The question is why your body could not kill that germ X when somebody who sat next to you and got exposed the same way did.

Jon - you could learn from the above as well. You had a classical case of getting sick from the lack of balance in the stress of training, the stress of life, and the recovery procedures this year.

From josse on Tue, Jul 01, 2008 at 20:05:35

So there Jon!

But everything Sasha said in the above is true. When I don't get enough sleep or put crapy food in the body I feel it and come down with something. It is the bodies way of making you slow down and take care of it.

From Jon on Tue, Jul 01, 2008 at 20:14:39

Sasha, if you could have found a way to make my spring less stressful (especially the whole house buying/selling/moving part), I would have jumped all over it.

Sometimes it is completly impossible to eliminate stress and get to bed at the appointed time and and and and and and. I think we would all jump on that band wagon of less stress if we could:)

Jon - when you cannot sleep and eat right, you have to cut the mileage and intensity. But usually you can at least eat right.

Sounds like your feeling better. Nice run. That Ragnar leg you did was absolutely impressive. I did the "Are Kidding me" leg before Ragnar and my calves were tight for a day so I know what you must be feeling by the pace you pushed up the mountain. Nice run. What's your next race?

Then I went on a couple little cool down runs to loosen up.  It felt good.

Hayden,

Good job running so much in hot St George. I love the program at Utah State. The coaches, Reeder and Gensel, are two of my best friends. They have a great running program. Although they don't have the huge numbers of talented runners that BYU has, they develope the runners they do have to make them great. You should email coach Gensel to get some info about Utah State. Best of Luck.

Cows scare me, I have been charged before so when I come across them I turn and run the other direction as fast as my little legs will go. They also poop/diarhea alot when they are scared of you. One time I ran a Diamond Fork trail and the front runners where scaring the cows and they crapped all over the trail. I was super fun running through that. (I hope that is still family friendly).

I woke up super early to get to the bus by 3:30 am. Then I warmed up. I noticed that there were more than just the 2-3 anticipated kenyans, there were 6. That wasn't very exciting. I went out comfortably fast the first half marathon. I was with the kenyans at 12 miles and then they took off. By the time that I was out of the canyon, 16 miles in, then I was feeling horrible. My legs were just not moving. Sasha ran with me for about 2 miles until mile mark 20. The last 10k were the most miserable miles that I have ever run. I was walking and then jogging about 8 minute pace. I was just glad for the race to be over. After the race then my legs hurt horribly. But I ate some food and within 20-30 minutes I was feeling good. I am about 95% recovered three days later. Great job Fast Running Blog runners.

Welcome to the most horrible marathon in Utah! It is a gut check. I can feel your pain on that course. You did awesome and dont forget that. To be next to kenyans at those miles you were at is great. Keep up the good work and Ill see you at the next marathon maybe!?

From Jon on Sun, Jul 27, 2008 at 23:08:34

Good job, Seth, on a tough race. The marathon is a very fickle race and when it goes bad, it goes REALLY bad as it seems you found out. We've all had these days, though- heck, Logan ran 2:55 at Ogden in 2007, then a 2:21 later at St. George. Chalk it up to experience and keep up your training. A 2:45 on a bad day is still better than 99% of people, so no worries.

By the way, have you moved to SLC now?

From Logan on Mon, Jul 28, 2008 at 11:14:21

This race was a blast. I had a great time with all the wonderful runners from the Fast Running Blog. The race went out pretty relaxed for a couple miles. Teren and I were running together out in front chatting about the Olympics, Lagat, Hall, and Bekele. Then we picked up the pace to 5:05 or so for a couple miles. At this point I let Teren know that I was running the half as a tempo run. So he kicked it down to 4:50 pace or so and left me alone. I ran to mile ten at a pretty even effort. Then I backed off, ten miles was long enough for a tempo run. The last couple miles I was running 5:40 pace, and the third place runner was closing on me slowly. I just kept going fast enough to hold him off and get 2nd overall. It was a fun race.

PS thanks Sasha for bringing me the extra teeshirt to run in. Go St. George running Center and fastrunningblog team.

PS Meagan broke her alltime record for the half marathon, 1:53. I am very proud of her.

Man I am excited for the race.  This 7 mile run was like a warmup.  it felt good.  I am looking forward to watching the Utes crush the Beavers today.  That should be fun.  but nothing this week compares to my main man Geb, with his 2:03:59 marathon.  We will see if Wanjiru can hit that mark.  Well good luck to everyone this weekend.

I ran a few miles with Jeff and Logan along the mississippi river.  It was nice to stretch out the legs.  We ran into Kara Goucher and Alberto Salazar while on the trail.  We stopped and talked with them for a minute.  It was fun.  (I didn't introduce Logan or Jeff, Jeff will probably never forgive me)

Yeah, I will never forgive you! ;-) We did run into Alberto the next night on our way to the dinner, and he seemed to recognize us but we didn't stop him to chat or take a pic.

Well the big race finally came.  The weather was cold when the Women's US Championship 10 mile race started (1 hour before the marathon).  The roads were wet, but it wasn't raining.  The marathon started easy.  No one wanted to lead, Logan and I relaxed and began running with Dennis Simonaitis.  Then the rain started. Mile 4 or so.  I noticed that I was not on the pace that I wanted to run so I left the pack alone to chase down the next two solo runners and the 2nd pack.  This took 4-5 miles.  I felt good at eleven miles in, so I surged ahead with the leaders of the second pack, including Micheal Wardian.  I was feeling good with them, but it was getting colder.  Soon I lost feeling in my feet and hamstrings and butt.  It became harder to turn over my stride, and I was slowing down by mile mark 20.  The last 10k was up and down rolling hills.  It was death, a strong headwind, with everyone strung out.  It was miserable.  At the finish I was just glad to be done.  I ran a 41:06 on the last 10k.  Ouch.  The race was a good learning experience.  I believe that I can hit the "A" standard on a day with better weather.

Nice job at the race in horrible conditions...man was that wet and cold or what? You ran strong and would have hit the cold but for the weather. Keep it up and I expect to see more great results from you.

I look forward to running with you again.

Nicely done, as you continue to gain experience.

From paul on Mon, Oct 06, 2008 at 11:03:47

Nice effort. It's tough to go when the body is shutting down from cold. Still, 2:29 is a decent time, all things considering, plus you got some awesome experience.

From wheakory on Mon, Oct 06, 2008 at 11:15:47

Great effort and way to finish with such bad conditions. You will definitely will have a "A" standard time in the future. I guess St. George and the Twin Cities marathon's were not the place to be.

From Sean Sundwall on Mon, Oct 06, 2008 at 11:16:20

Nice effort. Really glad I didn't make the trip. You've got way more potential than I do so hang in there. With your speed, you might even try qualifying using a 1:05 half marathon time. Houston is coming up on January 18th. You should think about it.

From Burt on Mon, Oct 06, 2008 at 12:23:39

Well, if that wasn't the "A" standard, it was definitely a "B+."

From Jon on Mon, Oct 06, 2008 at 14:17:59

You've only run 3 marathons, and 2 were sub-2:30. Not too bad, in my book. Sounds like you ran a good race and you've got plenty of time to get your qualifier.

From jtshad on Mon, Oct 06, 2008 at 15:32:06

Seth, I just checked my splits and I ran a 43 minute last 10K at TCM. Dang, man, where did that hill come from? It sure wasn't there on the bus tour!

Thanks for all the positive support. It was a fun race, and I am glad that Logan, Jeff and I were able to go and enjoy it. The last 10k was rough, but that gives me that much more incentive to train even harder for the next marathon.

Any thoughts for your next race?

From seth on Tue, Oct 07, 2008 at 14:18:08

I am still looking. St. Jude doesn't look bad. I am also toying around with doing a 50k with micheal Wardian. That would be a vauable learning experience. Do you have any suggestions? Which races would you do?

From paul on Tue, Oct 07, 2008 at 16:12:18

It depends how well you are recovering and how much fire you have. If you recover quick, you can certainly try a December or January marathon. St. Jude or PF Chang would certainly be good (fast, plus competition), but so would the U.S. Half Marathon Championships in Houston (January). With your speed, you probably have as good of a chance of hitting the 1:05 standard as you do 2:19. At Houston, you would see competition similar to Twin Cities, but it is a flat, fast course, and a good place to build up your resume.

Now that I think about it, doing a December marathon would be kind of a waste for you, since you can't qualify until a month later. It would be a shame to run under 2:19 at St. Jude and not have it count. Just wait a month or two, train more, and try Houston or PF Chang in January. Or LA in February.

At this point in your running career, it may be best to steer clear of ultramarathons, unless that is really your goal. 50K on the roads can tear a person up (unless you are Micheal Wardian, or a natural endurance guru).

From dave holt on Tue, Oct 07, 2008 at 16:42:40

Speaking of 50K's. I ran one this spring and really just ran it (no racing at all). I thought it wouldn't be too big a deal, but that extra mileage, even at a 6:30-7:00 pace made me pretty sore. Looking back, it took a couple weeks until I was able to start doing decent workouts again.

So... like Paul said, unless that is a goal, maybe stay clear.

Good job out at TC in what sounds like beastly conditions by the way.

From seth on Tue, Oct 07, 2008 at 21:07:53

Thanks for the advice guys. I will continue to moll things over a little and see what my body feels like in a month. The 50k will have to wait though. I think that you are right.

I ran 9 miles up city creek today.  It felt good to climb, and then the downhill was nice to open up my stride a little bit.  I am still sore, but I feel better than I did after my first two marathons.  This PF Chang's Rock and Roll Arizona Marathon advertisement does make me want to run it, but I think that I will pass this year.

Yesterday night I felt horrible.  I started to get a bad migraine and felt like I was going to puke.  I even left work early to go home and sleep.  I slept 10 hours and i woke up feeling pretty good, but I still feel like a migraine is coming on.  Oh Well. I still was able to run and get rid of some more soreness.  My legs are feeling better and better.  At work yesterday I didn't even notice being sore when I bent down to help customers.  So that was good.

Has anyone run the St. Jude Marathon?  Let me know what you think of it.

Thanks for helping her out. She is a great runner (3:33 at Boston this year, with a hurt back!) but has been battling some bad injuries this year something fierce.

I know some basics about the proper foot wear, but we have such a limited supply her and I don't know the specifics (like you gave her about the Kinsei).

Thanks again and keep up the strong running. How is life (work/school)? Say hi to Megan for me!

I went down to Texas for the 24 hour run US championships.  Mizuno gave me a couple pairs of Wave Riders, Tifosi gave me a couple pairs of sunglasses, Yankz! paid for my hotel and gave me their laces, Black Diamond gave me a spot headlight, and miomed gave me some lotions.  It was nice to get the support from all these great companies.  The course description said that it was a flat cour9 amse, only 9 feet of elevation change and that it was a 1 mile loop.  This made it easy to keep track of the distance that I had gone.  But when I showed up at the course I was surprised to find an extremely hilly course, with three hills per lap.  Also the laps where about 1.15 miles so it was more difficult to keep track of the distance you had traveled.  I also was told that I had the best chance of anyone of breaking the American Record at the race, but when I started running a guy in Brook's gear just took off.  I soon learned that he was the best 100 mile + runner in the world.  So obviously I had been lied to on every front.  It soon became apparent to me that it would be nearly impossible for me to get any money out of the race, due to the requirements on distance which were established before the race, to after just over 3 hours I decided to quit and head home a day early.  It was a miserable experience.  I would definitely advise people not to ever race the ultracentric, as I feel that it is run by a dishonest organization.  It was a miserable introduction to ultra running.

Hey, are you going to be working this weekend? We might be coming down to Ogden/SLC and may stop by the store to have my wife "fitted" for shoes. We have such a crappy selection up here and she developed a case of PF this year so I want to make sure we get her in the right shoes to help with/avoid this in the future when she starts running again.

I started training again today.  Time to get serious.  I ran 8 hilly miles thinking about last years Des News Marathon.  I will be much better prepared this year.  I am currently looking for a long term job in the running world in Utah.  I hope that I can find a good spot.  Well gotta go to the store.

I went on a nice jog with Meagan tonight.  We went up by city creek canyon and listened to a bunch of coyotes singing. It was fun to hear, especially in the middle of Salt Lake.

It was a crazy busy day yesterday.  I ended up running late in the evening and only made it 4 miles.  But I did get out and run, and that was great for me.

I had to get in another run before the snow hits.  I really don't mind if it snows in the mountains, but I don't like the snow in the valleys.  I like to run on dry roads, even if it is very cold.

I went out for a chilly 4.5 miles this morning.  The slippery footing was very nerve racking for the first couple miles, but then I began to remember how to run on ice.  (Thanks to living in Logan I picked up on this skill,  That city is a beautiful icebox.)

I ran another 10.5 miles this afternoon in the hills above the U of U campus.  The snow there is 6 inches or more deep.  It was pretty fun to run in, but my pace was slower than usual.  Oh Well. It was funny to see all the hikers with their boots and crampons as I went by in my nimbii. (That is the plural form for numbus.?)

I went on another long run around Salt Lake.  It is nice to have clean air.  I have to pound some more miles before the snowstorm this winter.  I am happy with how my running is going right now.

I went out for a ten miler.  Right now is pretty stressful with finals and life, but I am still getting in the running and sleep that I need.

Hang in there, and good luck on your finals. It's always very inspiring to see your miles. :) sno

I met up with the snow man and ran 13 miles through SLC today.  I stayed on the flats rather than running in my beloved foothills.  It is nice to be done with school for a while, and I am looking forward to training consistantly.
