Well the big race finally came.  The weather was cold when the Women's US Championship 10 mile race started (1 hour before the marathon).  The roads were wet, but it wasn't raining.  The marathon started easy.  No one wanted to lead, Logan and I relaxed and began running with Dennis Simonaitis.  Then the rain started. Mile 4 or so.  I noticed that I was not on the pace that I wanted to run so I left the pack alone to chase down the next two solo runners and the 2nd pack.  This took 4-5 miles.  I felt good at eleven miles in, so I surged ahead with the leaders of the second pack, including Micheal Wardian.  I was feeling good with them, but it was getting colder.  Soon I lost feeling in my feet and hamstrings and butt.  It became harder to turn over my stride, and I was slowing down by mile mark 20.  The last 10k was up and down rolling hills.  It was death, a strong headwind, with everyone strung out.  It was miserable.  At the finish I was just glad to be done.  I ran a 41:06 on the last 10k.  Ouch.  The race was a good learning experience.  I believe that I can hit the "A" standard on a day with better weather.

Nice job at the race in horrible conditions...man was that wet and cold or what? You ran strong and would have hit the cold but for the weather. Keep it up and I expect to see more great results from you.

I look forward to running with you again.

Nicely done, as you continue to gain experience.

Nice effort. It's tough to go when the body is shutting down from cold. Still, 2:29 is a decent time, all things considering, plus you got some awesome experience.

Great effort and way to finish with such bad conditions. You will definitely will have a "A" standard time in the future. I guess St. George and the Twin Cities marathon's were not the place to be.

Nice effort. Really glad I didn't make the trip. You've got way more potential than I do so hang in there. With your speed, you might even try qualifying using a 1:05 half marathon time. Houston is coming up on January 18th. You should think about it.

From Burt on Mon, Oct 06, 2008 at 12:23:39

Well, if that wasn't the "A" standard, it was definitely a "B+."

Good job Seth... Way to go for it.

hey, at least you ran a 41 last 10k. I ran my last 10k on Saturday in about 45. Hitting the wall bites doesn't it.

From Jon on Mon, Oct 06, 2008 at 14:17:59

You've only run 3 marathons, and 2 were sub-2:30. Not too bad, in my book. Sounds like you ran a good race and you've got plenty of time to get your qualifier.

Seth, I just checked my splits and I ran a 43 minute last 10K at TCM. Dang, man, where did that hill come from? It sure wasn't there on the bus tour!

From josse on Mon, Oct 06, 2008 at 22:34:30

Great job!! Running in those conditions is no fun, all of us at SG can sympathize with you.

Thanks for all the positive support. It was a fun race, and I am glad that Logan, Jeff and I were able to go and enjoy it. The last 10k was rough, but that gives me that much more incentive to train even harder for the next marathon.

Strong race Seth!

Good job!

I agree with the others - great race on a horrible day. I actually think everyone who ran SGM this year can empathize with you, except we got to run downhill for most of the time! And our times still suffered because of the weather! Keep working hard, you have plenty of time to get that OTQ.
